In the Lead is a strengths based leadership program for high school students that incorporates both mentoring and volunteering components.
The program lasts for one school semester and is currently worth 3 credits with Alberta Education.
While our students are moving away from focusing on what doesn't work in their lives, In the Lead provides them with an opportunity to move towards what does work.
This approach leads to more thoughtful, engaged, caring young members of the community.
In the Lead also explores the practical aspect of leadership through group volunteering events where all of the participants actively engage in activities that give back to the community.
It is engaging students within their community in a meaningful way which enables them to understand and embrace their ability to help others.
It gives them the opportunity to practice the leadership skills learned in class.
It allows them to see themselves through the lens of someone helping others as opposed to someone needing help.
Coaches volunteer from local corporations and are trained by the In the Lead team to provide individual support to students.
Volunteer Coaches foster the development of strengths through one on one meetings and ongoing communication throughout the semester.
We want to engage in new partnerships that will allow us to build on the existing potential in all high school students in our city by developing leadership skills, fostering positive character traits, and creating a positive connection with community.
